the dwellings

built around 1896, victoria square was the first municipal housing in manchester, and the oldest still in use. utilising the creative skills of the residents, a book using fact, fiction and anecdotes as well as new and found imagery links the history of this fascinating building to the history of manchester and the stories of those living in the square. funded by manchester city council and the arts council, writer kim wiltshire and photographer graeme vaughan worked with the residents of victoria square sheltered housing to create a social history of 'the dwellings'. through a series of workshops and meetings, the residents have contributed to the book, learning new skills and working together as a community.

the book was published in december 2008, free to all victoria square residents, local schools, libraries and any not for profit organisation of charity.
